Pipe freezing kit DIY?
Hi I plan on adding a new radiator to my central heating system but dont fancy draining all the inhibitor. I have heard of kits available to freeze pipes. Its 15mm pipes. I plan on adding 2 tees to the supply and return line. What kits are available? I have seen Arctic 2 spray kits, pretty cheap. Any good? Some advice would be appreciated! Thanks
Your inhibitor is also likely to lower the freezing point of the water, so you will need to shoot for a little bit more cold than not. 15mm is about a US-size 3/4' pipe, so quite substantial in terms of how much freezing you will actually need to do, and for how long. Suggestion: Rent the freeze kit - you will be able to get access to a US$2,000 kit with enough CO2 to do the job rather than a much cheaper kit and having to buy a single-use cannister.
Three suggestions:
a) Make everything up before freezing and cutting your pipes. If you cannot do this, invest in two ball valves to compression-Ts to install on the supply and return lines.
b) Use the correct hydronic T-fittings. These sorts of Ts are 'directed' so that if you have a loop or modified loop system you do not risk causing a short-circuit that kills the radiators beyond the supply and return risers - this is a _VERY_ common problem with DIY radiator additions - so take this to heart. A link to such a US-sized fitting is below - I am sure there is a similar fitting for 15mm.
c) Use compression-fittings at the primary connections your T - note that this is a partial repeat of a). You will likely not have the time to sweat new fittings into the supply and return before melting the shebang. Link below. You can sweat stubs to the compression fittings from your hydronic T - just make sure you get the direction correct (Arrow (---->) points in the direction of flow). Further to this, hydronic systems are low-pressure, so there is far less chance that a compression fitting will leak over time.
