How much has Magna Carta really safeguarded English/British liberties?
During the recent debate on 42-day detention, we have heard a lot about the centuries-old British liberties supposedly enshrined in Magna Carta. Since 1215, however, there has been much oppression in England/Britain and its empire - the burning of witches and heretics, persecution of Catholics and Protestants, dictatorial kings (e.g. Henry VIII), torture, slavery, compulsory church attendance, press gangs, censorship, land enclosures, restriction of voting rights, denial of the right to strike, etc, etc. So how effective has Magna Carta really been? Would we have been any worse off without it?
Some of what you say is true. No laws go unbroken. But the Magna Charta is still important today because it is the bedrock of the history of the English-speaking peoples.

From that came the concept of "popular sovereignty," meaning it was not in the person or the office of the Crown, but in the people themselves.
From that came the concept of "individual sovereignty," meaning each individual was "endowed with unalienable rights."
If we got from the Magna Charta to the Constitution of the United States, I'd say it did its job admirably.
