Cleaning Barrel
Cleaning a rusted gun barrel?
I bought a mosin nagant 91/30 as my first gun. Being an amateur i didn't clean it after shooting corrosive surp ammo. Now no matter how many times i clean it the rust inside the bore remains. I use a hoppes 9 cleaning kit but it hasn't seemed to work...any suggestions?

I am very glad I caught your question. As a Mosin Nagant owner myself I can help you out.
First and foremost, your best friend is not Hoppes #9 for your initial cleaning procedure. Hot water and Simple Green are your best friends after shooting Corrosive Type ammunition. And... you must start your cleaning process immediately when you return home from the range.
The hot water and Simple Green help break up the Sulfur Salts that form in the barrel when it starts to cool. These salts attract water vapor in the air, and when the natrual condensation processes start, (say overnight), this creates Sulfuric Acid, and this is the corrosive material that eats at your barrel.
After you perform this function, then you need to completely rinse the barrel with clear hot water, to get the detergent out. Then completely dry the barrel and action. I use a hair dryer to evaporate off the remaining water.
Then clean as you normally would with the Hoppes #9. Now to prevent the rust from forming again, Brake Free CLP is your best friend. This material actaully penetrates the metal surfaces and creates a barrier that helps prevent oxygen and moisture from causing more rusting issues.
I have an 8mm Mauser. It regularly fires the Turkish Military Surplus, which is corrosive, also my Mosin Nagant, fires Military Surplus which is corrosive. When these two rifles return home, they are the ones that receive immediate attention.
I apply a fairly heavy coat of CLP to the inside of the actions and barrels. You must remember though, that when you head to the range, you need to run a clean dry patch through the barrel and action to remove the excess lubricant.
Unfortunately, this is the cost of owning such antique rifles.
I did exactly what you did to my Mosin Nagant. As long as you catch it immediately, you will do minimal damage to the barrel, and it should shoot just fine. Keep in mind though, these rifles were not "Tac-Drivers" either. They were combat bolt action rifles.
