Do people over-dramatize the effect of pistols against body armor?
A lot of people say if you get shot with a pistol while wearing body armor you'll get knocked over, possibly with a broken rib or two.
But in the 45 minute shootout incident in Los Angales, every time one of the robbers was shot by police, they just stood there like they hadn't felt it.
Which do you think is more true?
there are many grades of bodyarmor. If a pistol shot hit a ceramic plate, it would dissipate the energy effectively across the entire plate, and it wouldn't do much. However, a marginally effective vest, like a IIa, is marginally effective because it is less capable of dissipating the energy as far or as quickly, so the same bullet hit will be concentrated in a much smaller area...not so small it rips through the vest and goes into the wearer, but small enough to feel like a sledge hammer hitting the chest.
What I think is overdramatized is the effect of bodyarmor on serious rifle cartridges. Common elk cartridges like the 7mm remington magnum would go through bodyarmor like a fart through old underwear.
